Cubs Rego Day

Posted on December 30, 2012

The Cubs will be starting training soon, with the 2013 campaign set to be a strong one. The following are details that were emailed out: if you would like more information, email the club ([email protected]) and we’ll get you details.

This email will have most of the important pieces of information that you will need to get started, however if you have any other questions at all, we will be more than happy to answer them at the registration/first training session. Answers to the most common questions can be found here

– To be eligible for the 2013 Cubs, you must not be 19 years of age on the 1st of January 2013. You can turn 19 in 2013, but you can’t already be 19. The minimum age (set by the league) is 15 years old on the 1st of January 2013.

– The first training sessions will be held on Wednesday the 9th of January, starting at 6pm. We will be meeting at the Arena gym, which is located on campus (a map with the location can be found here,) at the coffee shop there (Ralph’s Coffee Shop). We will be having a brief chat about what we’re going to do, introduce the coaches and get anyone who wants to play registered with the university. After we have done that, we will be having a brief training session, and envisage the night to be over some time around 8pm. You will need a parent or legal guardian present to sign paperwork, as the university requires a signature for registration of juniors.

If you can’t make that session, don’t fret: you will be able to register at your first training session you can attend. We appreciate that many people are unavailable at that stage of the year, and wouldn’t want to penalise anyone who can’t make the first sessions, but we strongly recommend getting to as many training sessions as possible. American Football is a very unique sport with a large number of new skills for players to learn, and for safety reasons as a coaching staff we will not allow a player on the field if we are not confident that they can execute the skills required to be safe out there. Coming to training is the only way to learn said skills.

– For this first training session, all you will require will be football boots for running on grass; soccer or rugby boots are absolutely fine. We will most likely be getting into full equipment (helmet, shoulder pads, other protective equipment) 2 training sessions after that. At that stage you will require a mouth guard to train, which can be purchased from any chemist. Boots and a mouthguard are the pieces of equipment you need to provide, we provide the rest.

– Training will be held every Wednesday evening (from 6:30pm to 8:30pm) and Sunday morning (10:30am-1pm), on an oval on campus. With all the construction work being done on our regular training oval (St John’s) we aren’t exactly sure which oval the university will want us to use, but regardless, training will be on at those times, on campus. Once the season starts, there are no more Sunday trainings, only the Wednesday evening sessions.

– Games are held on Friday evenings, at different ovals in Sydney. We are not in control of the draw, nor oval allocations, so I can’t give you any more specific information than that at this stage, but games are on Friday evenings.
