A Point To Prove

Gundoganli hands over the record plaque

Liam Erby has used his stellar 2010 season to sweep to a new Lions career point scoring record.  With the playoffs still to come, Erby has already set a new season record of 198 points (23 TDs, 1 2pt, 1 FG & 55 PATs) and, on the way, broken the old career mark of 579 points held by former Lions running back Salim Gundoganli.

In a nice touch, Liam Erby did not know he had broken a record which Gundoganli did not realise he had held.  On handing the record plaque over to Erby after the final regular season game against the Outlaws, Gundoganli revealed that he had not been aware he had held the career points scoring record until being contacted to make the presentation to the new holder.

Gundoganli had taken over the record back on 15 July 1995 in a game against the now defunct Parramatta Bears.  In his eight year career from 1989 to 1996, Gundoganli amassed 93 touchdowns (still the career touchdown record), 10 2 point conversions and a solitary PAT to make up his total of 579 points

Erby passed that mark in the round 4 game against the West Sydney Pirates, running for 232 yards and scoring 24 points.  Not even his best effort, Erby shares the game record of 36 points (with Gundoganli and Nick Law) for scoring 5 TDs and kicking 6 PATs against the Wollongong Mustangs in 2007.

Erby has been a driving force behind the Lions scoring a GNSW record of 57.7 points per game in the 2010 regular season.  And he still has a point to prove!
