Website update #13 (5 December 2006)

The Multimedia page has been updated with photographs from the Week 12 game against the Penrith City Outlaws.

We Are The Champions (2 December 2006)

Sydney Uni added another Waratah Bowl to its trophy cabinet on Saturday night by defeating UTS 34-26 to win the 2006 NSWGFL Championship.  The game featured many memorable plays.  Game MVP, Matt Croasdaile, got the Lions on the board with a big bust down the centre of the field that went for 60 yards and a touchdown.  Chris Snagg won a wrestle for the ball to pull down a key interception in the endzone to snuff out a scoring threat.  Anthony Sinton scored on one of the greatest runs in Lions history, first dropping the punt behind him to add further yards to the return, then setting off on a length of the field, tackle busting, cutting and weaving run which mesmerised the defence and brought the crowd to its feet.  Sinton also picked off a pass and returned it to the UTS five yard line to set up a further score for the Lions.  Mixed in with these moments of magic was a lot of hard work from the offensive line engine room - Laurie Hypponen, David Allen, Tim Snape, Cameron Lawrence and James Gifford - and relentless play from the Lions defence.  The Lions have now won 8 NSWGFL Championships, more than any other club, and the last 4 in a row.  Congratulations to Head Coach Stephen Dunne and the entire squad.

Lions Win Through To Waratah Bowl (25 November 2006)

Sydney Uni came back from a half-time deficit to defeat the Penrith City Outlaws 25-15 and advance to the NSWGFL Championship game.  The Lions jumped to a 6 point lead early on a Mathew Freeman touchdown reception, but the Penrith City scored and converted to take the lead after an interception had given the Outlaws possession close to the Lions' endzone.  Strong play from the Outlaws, penalties and a wet ball combined to see the half end with Uni down 6-7.  The Lions defence held strong in the second half, while Chris Snagg and Matt Croasdaile got the running game on track for the Lions to surge to a 25-7 lead.  A long kick-off return and a 4th down pass completion gave the Outlaws a final touchdown as time had almost expired.  The final result was a tough 25-15 victory and a place in the Waratah Bowl.  This will be the Lions seventh straight appearance in the NSWGFL Championship game - a NSWGFL record.  Sydney Uni will meet UTS in the Waratah Bowl at Homebush Hockey Field No 2 on Saturday, 2 December, at 7pm, after UTS defeated the West Sydney Pirates in a high scoring match.

Lions repeat the dose  (11 November 2006)

The Lions improved even on last week's strong performance in beating the Sutherland Seahawks 56-0 at the Berkeley Sports Club on Saturday afternoon.  With the Outlaws defeating the Pirates, the Lions are assured of finishing the regular season in top spot for the third straight year and are likely to meet next week's opponent, the Outlaws, in the playoff match.  All results from the week-end's games have been posted to the NSWGFL Table & Results page on the Lions page.

Lions roll over Seahawks  (4 November 2006)

150 Not Out  (30 October 2006)

Lions stalwart Craig Morgan (#82) has become the first Lion to play 150 senior NSWGFL games for the club.

Craig Morgan first joined the club in 1993 as a foundation member of the Sydney Uni Cubs.  He led the Cubs as middle linebacker and defensive captain during the 1994-5 seasons, when the Cubs went undefeated and won the NSWGFL Junior championship in both seasons.  He was good enough to play for seniors while still eligible as a junior, starting his career with the Lions in 1993 playing centre and wearing number 59 - a famous number for the club, being the former number of club co-founder, Keith Phillips.  His first game was a 22-6 victory over the Sutherland Seahawks played on Sydney Uni Oval No 1 in which he was a starter at centre.  The next year, Morgan moved to linebacker and began his rise through the ranks of defensive playmakers.  In 1997, Morgan changed his number to 82 and lead the seasonal tackle count for the first time.  It was a position he was not to relinquish until 2005, when coaching duties limited his playing time.  During his career, Morgan has set many defensive player records, including most tackles in a game (18 v Bondi 21/11/04), most tackles in a season (85 in 2004), most career tackles averaged (495), career safeties (3), career fumble recoveries (9) and career fumble recoveries for TD (2).  He was one of the captains and the leading tackler of the 2004 defence which set NSWGFL records for the most shut-outs in a season (9) and the least points conceded in a regular season (12).  More importantly, he has led the defence and the team by example with a winning attitude and a knack for making big plays.  Morgan was voted into the 20 Year Anniversary Team at linebacker.  As at the date of writing, Morgan holds the club record for senior NSWGFL games played with 152 games and reached the 150 game milestone in the week six victory over the UTS.

Pirates End Lions' Streak  (23 September 2006)

The Lions lost to the West Sydney Pirates 27-20 on Saturday to end their NSWGFL record winning streak at 33 wins.  All results from the week-end's games have been posted to the NSWGFL Table & Results page on the Lions page.  A match report has been posted to the Home page.

Now that the streak is in the history books, Coach Dunne gives these facts about it:

The winning streak began on November 1, 2003 - ironically against the Pirates. That works out at over 1,000 days since we lost to the Outlaws that year. I guess for me its put in perspective by the fact that my son Christian was turning 2 the next day, and now we are planning his 5th birthday.

The other fact about the Pirates is that they are the team we beat most in that 33 game run 7 times, including a semi and a Championship Game so I guess they were well motivated. The winning run we had is something we are proud of, but we only have ever felt that it was a reflection of our effort and our football. Our major goals for 2006 remain the same to make the playoffs, advance to the Championship Game and win.

Lions hold off Outlaws 20-13  (16 September 2006)

The Lions defence shut out its opponent, but touchdown returns on a kick-off and an interception saw the Outlaws keep the game close.  The Lions did enough to earn a 20-13 victory.  All results from the week-end's games have been posted to the NSWGFL Table & Results page on the Lions page.

Week Two washout  (8 September 2006)

The council has closed the grounds at UNSW Hockey Complex, Little Bay, for this week-end, resulting in the games at that venue being washed out.  Although Craik Park, Austral, was open for play (subject to further rain) as at Friday afternoon,  the league executive looked at the forecast and decided to declare the games at that venue washed out as well.  All round two games will be replayed on 4 November 2006 at the same venue.  This means that the Lions will play the Seahawks two weeks in a row!

NSWGFL Draw  (7 September 2006)

There have been further changes to the draw, including a change of venue for the Lions third round game against the Outlaws, which will now be played at Craik Park, Austral.  The Calendar, Lions Season Draw page and NSWGFL Table & Results page have all been updated with the latest changes.

The 2006 season gets underway for the Lions with its Registration & Equipment Day from 2pm on Saturday, 24 June 2006 at the Den (behind the grandstand to No1 Oval, Sydney Uni).  All returning players and newcomers for 2006 are required to attend.  Returning players must bring all their Club equipment.  Players will complete registration forms for membership of Sydney Uni Sport and the Club equipment hire scheme.  The Registration & Equipment Day is the last day for payment of the Sydney Uni Sport membership fee ($90).  On payment of the Sydney Uni Sport membership fee, a player will be eligible to participate in pre-season training.  Only players covered by the insurance policy obtained with Sydney Uni Sport membership will be allowed to participate in pre-season training.  A stocktake will be taken of Club gear and all players will be measured for equipment sizes.  The Lions will be training in full equipment from 7 July 2006 and only those players who have paid the equipment hire fees (helmet: $50; pads: $50) will be issued with Club equipment for training.  Equipment hire fees may be paid at the Registration & Equipment Day.  By dealing with registration, fee payments and equipment on 24 June, the team will be free to get on with what it does best at training - playing football.  No training time will be used to deal with these administrative matters.  If any player is unable to attend the Registration & Equipment Day, then that player must arrange with the Club to complete the Sydney Uni Sport membership and equipment hire forms and pay the appropriate fees prior to the Registration & Equipment Day.   If necessary, relevant forms can be posted to the player and completed forms and payments by cheque can be posted back to the Club.  All of the relevant telephone, email and postal contact details for the Club are on the Contacts page.  Pre-season training commences on Sunday, 25 June 2006 at 10.30am at St John's Oval.  Only registered and financial players will be permitted to train.  Get organised now so you do not miss out.

Cubs Homecoming

The Cubs will play their Homecoming Game against the Northwestern Pumas at 7.00pm on Friday, 2 June 2006 at David Phillips Reserve, Banks Avenue, Daceyville.  After the game, a function will be held at the Royal Exchange Hotel, 203 Marrickville Road, Marrickville, for all players, parents and supporters.  This is a great chance for the Club to come together to support the Cubs as they start their run to the playoffs.  These Cubs players represent the future of the Club - and that future is now!  All Lions players are expected to attend.

Pub Sponsor (23 May 2006)

The Royal Exchange Hotel, Marrickville, has joined our team as Pub sponsor.  The Hotel will be a great venue to get together after our games and, as part of the sponsorship package, will shout each week's game MVP to a dinner for two at the Hotel.  The Club will hold the Cubs Homecoming post-game celebration at the Hotel on 2 June 2006 and the Royal Exchange Hotel will host a number of other functions later in the season, including the Lions end of season presentation lunch and Superbowl functions.  The Club hopes this will be the start of a long partnership with the Royal Exchange Hotel.  Go to the SPONSORS page from the link on the HOME page, then click the "Pub Sponsor" link for further details on the Royal Exchange Hotel.

Lions Flag II (14 May 2006)

The Club held its second annual flag football day on Saturday, 6 May 2006 at the Square, Sydney Uni.  Seven teams competed, but only one could go home as winners of Lions Flag II.

The day began with two old boys teams - Sydney Uni (the Throwbacks) and Bondi (BOBs) - facing off to re-kindle past glories and settle old scores.  Not sure how much glory was re-kindled, but the Throwbacks won the battle of the veterans 26-6 (see Old Boys page for more details and photos).  In other first round action, Star Funk Deluxe - quarterbacked by Petar Lackovic and featuring Chris Snagg, Joey Brown, Leigh Louey-Gung and two UTS players (whose names I forget!) - won a tight contest 13-6 over Can't Throw, Can't Catch (Anthony Sinton, Mathew Freeman, Joe Lim, Tau Saipaia, Matt Croasdaile, Phil Reisacher and others).  Prison Break (Keirnan Dorney, James Gifford, Dave Thode, Jeff Bramon, Daniel Buechl, Nick Schwalbe, Will) completed the first round with a big win 39-18 over the Angry Young Men (Liam Erby, Grenville Newbold, Tim Fyalkowski, David Bourke, Andrew Matthews and Nik Spadina).

In the second round, both old boys teams scored wins.  The Throwbacks staged a comeback to get past Prison Break 12-8 in the dying moments of the match; while BOBs were getting better with age, winning 14-0 over a Medicine Faculty team put together by Tyler Chan and Ed Abadir.  It was certainly a comfort to the old boys to know that medical assistance was at hand!  Can't Throw, Can't Catch overcame a determined effort from the Angry Young Men to force their way into the semi-finals.  Star Funk Deluxe rounded out the preliminary rounds with a 21-6 win over the Med Students.

Star Funk Deluxe prevailed over Prison Break in one semi-final; while the other went into overtime.  The Throwbacks had staged another comeback to tie the scores 18-18 on the last play of the game.  Anthony Sinton drove Can't Throw, Can't Catch into the endzone for a touchdown on the first overtime possession, but the point after try was batted down.  The Thrownbacks scored a touchdown on their answering possession and then sealed the win 25-24 with an Ogborne to Ogborne connection for the conversion.

The Final, between Star Funk Deluxe and the Throwbacks,  was fast and furious.  Star Funk Deluxe scored first, but the Throwbacks answered back with two unconverted TDs for a 12-7 lead.  Salim Gundoganli raced all the way up the sideline only to be ruled to have stepped on the line.  Chris Snagg found Joey Brown deep behind the coverage only to be ruled to have stepped over the line of scrimmage.  On the last play of the game, Ogborne threw long into the end-zone for all-time Lions rushing leader Salim Gundoganli, but current Lions rushing leader Chris Snagg was there to bat the ball down and preserve a 20-18 win for Star Funk Deluxe.  It was a fitting end to a great game.

The day was a resounding success and thanks must go to the Committee and, in particular, Dave Thode and Liam Erby for staging the event.  Some photographs of the day have been placed on the Multimedia page.

SU Sport Awards (6 April 2006)

The Club was honoured with nominations for two awards presented at the Sydney University Sport Annual Sports Awards Dinner held on Wednesday, 5 April, in the Great Hall at the University.  John O'Neil, the former CEO of Rugby Australia and now CEO of Football Federation of Australia, was the guest speaker at the dinner which featured a galaxy of national and international champions in a wide variety of sports.  The Club was represented by Andrew Ogborne, Stephen Dunne and their wives.

Stephen Dunne was nominated for Coach of the Year in a field which included Steve Surridge, the rugby first grade coach, Bill Millard, Anthony Stuart and Damien Fanning.  All of these coaches had guided their teams to state or national titles.  The winner was Damien Fanning, the coach of the Men's Waterpolo team, which competes in the National Waterpolo league and has won the last three national titles.  Our congratulations go to Stephen Dunne for this well-deserved accolade.

The Club was also nominated for the Club of the Year Award.  Again, the competition was stiff, with the Cricket Club, Rugby Club, Men's Waterpolo Club and Athletics Clubs also being nominated.  The Athletics Club had a record number of athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games, the Waterpolo Club had won the National title for the last 3 years, the Cricket Club had won the first grade competition for the first time in about 50 years and the Rugby Club had completed its greatest ever season, winning the Tooheys Cup/first grade premiership, 5 of 8 other grade premierships and the Club Championship.  Not surprisingly after such a stellar year, the Rugby Club won the award.  The Club was honoured by being included in such high performing company.

The evening was still a great success for the Club, with highlight footage of our season being played during the awards ceremony and the profile of our sport being raised within the University.  With any luck, we hope to be back for many years to come.
