20 Year Anniversary Team

As part of the celebrations to mark its twentieth year, Sydney Uni American Football named a 20 Year Anniversary Team at its reunion dinner held at the Grandstand Sports Bar on 23 August 2003.  Nominations for each position, giving player statistics and achievements, were circulated to past and present players.  A flood of responses was received back by the Club and a committee of past and present coaches and players then selected a team made up of the best Lions to have played prior to the Club's twentieth season.  Profiles of the members of the 20 Year Anniversary Team, giving their statistics and achievements as at the date of selection, are set out below:

Smarts, good hands and great courage.  Lions career records for receptions (146), receiving yards (2,483) and TD receptions (41).  Lions season records for receptions (36 in 1989) and receiving yardage (670 in 1989).  Lions record for receiving yardage in a game (171 v Liverpool 30/7/1989).  Lead the team in pass receiving for four seasons (1988, 1989, 1992, 1993).  Lead the team in scoring for two seasons (1988 & 1989).  Fourth in career scoring (269) and the most points scored by a receiver.  Started on NSWGFL championship teams of 1992 and 1995.  Took his first ever reception (an innocuous 10 yard curl-in from his brother) across the middle and all the way for a 64 yard touchdown.  Made more yards after the catch than any other Lions receiver with a variety of spin moves learnt from Gary Clark (Redskins).  Stood nonchalantly on the sideline (but inbounds) before sprinting upfield and holding a diving grab on the "missing receiver" trick play against the Bondi Raiders in the 1992 Grandfinal to set up the winning score.  Started at cornerback for last two seasons.

Developed into a dominant offensive tackle, with size and overwhelming power. Through 1994-6, the Lions unashamedly ran behind Manu and challenged the opposition to stop them. They couldn't. The Lions ran for 1,428 yards at 204 yards per game in 1994 (4th ranked Lions offence), 2,446 yards at 271.8 yards per game in 1995 (1st ranked) and 2,354 yards at 235.4 yards per game in 1996 (2nd ranked).  Played on NSWGFL championship teams of 1992 and 1995 [and 2003].  Taught the team the Haka at the 1992 pre-season team dinner and then, in one of the great moments in club history, lead the Lions in a victory Haka in the middle of Brookvale Oval after the 1992 Grand final victory.  Fumbled away his ill-fated career as a running back in the 1993 Seven-a-side tournament.
